Improved Process Control
Firing Precision Ceramics
Project Description
We worked with our client to identify processes that could be improved.
One of these was a slow firing cycle. Ceralink was able to reduce
the firing time for a strategic mineral product by a factor of 2.
We employed dilatometry to understand the material’s expansion
and contraction behavior during firing.
We discovered that there was a critical phase change in the material
over a small temperature range. This allowed us to control the ramp
rate through critical temperature zones, and ramp faster through
non-critical zones.
The new heating cycle has been implemented in the company’s
production of this product. They are enjoying a 50 % decrease in
energy consumption, 50 % reduction in firing time, which allows
them to supply their product to the market faster and more efficiently.
