Zirconia

Zirconia (zirconium oxide) is an excellent thermal and electrical insulator. Yttria stabilized zirconia undergoes phase transformation toughening, as it can change from a tetragonal phase to a monoclinic phase, which puts a propagating crack tip into compression.

Microwave sintering of zirconia has been demonstrated at Ceralink. Alumina couples with microwave energy directly at elevated temperatures (above 600 ºC).

3 mol% yttira- structural ceramics
8 mol% yttria- fuel cell applications, gem stones

Zirconia can also be stabilized with cerium, calcium and magnesium oxides.

Major uses of alumina are in refractories, ceramics, dental, fuel cells, abrasive applications and gem stones.

Material: Ceramic
Chemical Formula: ZrO2
Properties: High strength, high toughness, high temperature, wear resistant
